The word terrier comes from the Latin word terra, meaning earth, and that is what all these dogs have in common: they have a proclivity to kill rodents and vermin by digging or going to ground after them. In Medieval and earlier times, these types of dogs were commonly found around castles, homes and barns to keep the rodent populations under control.

Some of these terriers were later bred for sport to kill rats in pit contests, which later led to breeding to fighting against each other in dog fights. Thankfully, this is illegal in many countries today.

Terriers range in size from very small to quite large (they can be divided into long-legged and short-legged breeds), but all Terriers are recognized for their distinctive "Terrier" personality: energetic, feisty, spirited, and full of attitude.

Most terriers do not have a high tolerance for other animals, including dogs - though being raised from a puppy with others can really help. Terriers make engaging pets, but need an owner with the determination to match their dogs lively characters.

My name is "Buddy" and I'm a yellow lab. My favorite thing to do is fetch a ball. I also like to bark at cars and go swimming in the lake whenever I can. It's great to be a dog!
